About the Artist
Theresa Hong is an artist and art therapist in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Theresa Hong is an abstract painter and printmaker. Her work explores movement and color interactions by intuitively arranging and layering abstract forms. These harmonious and fluid shapes cultivate calm, while the contrasting vibrant color choices evoke an energetic playfulness. The resulting work carries an ease of simplicity, while also evoking a palpable rhythm.
Theresa finds solace within her busy life through the art making process. Coming from an art therapy background has informed her open-minded and intuitive approach to creating. After placing the first shape, Theresa indulges in the freedom of improvisation, each subsequent shape seeking to balance the previous one. She embraces the challenge of responding to “mistakes” in the process, rather than adhering to a rigid plan. Theresa believes in the healing power of art and the importance of a creative practice for all individuals, which is what she seeks through her own work.
Her artwork is a response to her experiences; what she takes in, she then processes and articulates through creating. The contrast of fluid shapes and bold colors mirrors her day-to-day experience: highs, lows, chaos, beauty. The shapes dance across the paper, representing constant movement or perhaps even a journey, and seek to find balance and harmony amongst one another.
Theresa was born and raised in Maryland. She attended Emory University where she earned a bachelors degree in Psychology and Visual Arts. She earned a masters degree in Art Therapy and Creativity Development at Pratt Institute. Theresa currently works in the San Francisco Bay Area as an art therapist in private practice. She is a mom to three-year-old twins and enjoys time in nature with her family whenever possible. Theresa has shown her art in Brooklyn, Napa, and San Francisco. She is currently showing at City Art Gallery in San Francisco, CA and is self-represented through this co-operative gallery. Theresa was featured in AQ1 – Art Queens quarterly catalog in the winter 2023 edition.
